Health Care Reform: The Emanuel Way

If the name Ezekiel Emanuel, M.D. does not mean anything to you, it should.  He is the brother of Rahm Emanuel, Chief of Staff to President Elect Barak Obama.

Currently, Dr. Emanuel is the Chairman of the Department of Bioethics at The Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  Prior to joining NIH, he was a breast oncologist.

His current crusade is to promote Healthcare Reform, and this past week, he spoke at the American Enterprise Institute on “Healthcare Guaranteed: a Simple Secure Solution for America” his recent book on healthcare reform.

Dr. Emanuel does a great job outlining the various reform plans and their plusses and minuses from his perspective.  His plan (Guaranteed Access Plan) is bold and far reaching and would mean changing the entire healthcare system along with adopting a value added tax of at least 10% (national sales tax).  This is not to say it is without detractors, but for those interested in a brief lesson on the healthcare debate, the two presentations (Dr. Emanuel and Tom Millers), provide a great starting point and a great debate.
