William Early Matory Sr. MD (1928-2009)

Dr. William Earl Matory, Sr., Director of Continuing Medical Education. Dr. Matory, is known locally and nationally for his contributions to trauma care, burn care, continuing medical education and as the developer of a number of new programs at Howard University, passed away on January 25th at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC.  Dr. Matory served as director of CME of the National Medical Association since,  1975 and CME Director at Howard University until 2003.

Dr. Matory was one of the speakers at last summer’s AMA House of Delegates meeting in opposition to the proposed CEJA guidelines.  He was tireless, working until the day he died on ensuring that physicians especially in underserved areas received the best continuing medical education possible.

This weekend the Washington Post ran a great obituary Surgeon Helped Howard University Grow about Dr. Matory that should be read by all, he was a surgeon and pioneer.

He leaves behind quite a legacy,  with children and grand children many of which are practicing medicine.  His son Lorand Matory, PhD an anthropology professor at Harvard was primarily responsible for the faculty no confidence vote of Lawrence Summers (former ,Treasury Secretary under Clinton, and Obama Chief Economic Advisor) as the President of Harvard.

Dr. Matory will be missed.
