The ABC’s of Accredited CME

Accredited CME plays an important role not only in assisting physicians in maintenance of licensure but with maintenance of certification as well.  In 2004 the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) issued the updated Standards for Commercial Support of CME and in 2006 released the Updated Accreditation Criteria. During the past several years, physicians involved in the planning and implementation of accredited CME have expressed frustration regarding “”all the ACCME rules.”

The American Academy of Dermatology and The France Foundation, both ACCME-accredited providers, recently developed an online educational activity – The ABCs of Accredited CME – to clarify that the intent of the “rules” is that accredited CME be based on the principles of adult learning and be independent of industry influence.  The online educational activity is presented in short modules and participants can select which module(s) they wish to complete.
