The opioid crisis in the United States continues to worsen with thousands dying each month, and those numbers predicted to escalate in the years to come. In 2017 alone, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 47,736 people died from opioid-drug overdoses (on average, 130 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose). Though prescriptions of opioids have steadily dropped (by 19.2% since 2006), healthcare practitioners (HCPs) still need guidance on how to treat patients with opioid use disorder (OUD). In an effort to achieve this goal and help contain the opioid epidemic, Rockpointe has launched a new on-demand webcourse designed to help HCPs who treat patients with OUD. This CME/CE-certified, MOC-eligible activity focuses on increasing awareness of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and other HCP-driven strategies to combat OUD.
All HCPs – including physicians, nurses, and pharmacists – on the interdisciplinary OUD management team have major roles to play in combating the opioid epidemic. However, a multidisciplinary approach to care is often underutilized, increasing the strain on primary care providers. “On the Front Line of a Crisis: Improving the Care and Education of Patients with Opioid Use Disorder” will help participants responsibly prescribe and dispense opioid therapies, while providing quality care and MAT education for their patients with OUD.
This program is intended for primary care providers (PCPs), nurse practitioners (NPs), nurses, physician assistants (PAs), pharmacists, pain specialists, and other members of the interdisciplinary team involved in the management of patients with OUD. At the conclusion of the activity, participants should be able to demonstrate the ability to:
- Implement HCP-led strategies to optimize the prescribing of, dispensing of, and education on opioids.
- Integrate the latest Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) MAT recommendations into OUD patient care plans.
Completion of this course will fulfill 1.00 hour of CME/CE for most state requirements with opioid-, pain management-, and law-related continuing education. Check your state regulations to read the exact CME/CE requirements for your license renewal.
Successful completion of this program, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 1.0 Medical Knowledge Maintenance of Certification (MOC) point in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) MOC program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME/CE credit claimed for the activity.
The webcourse is available through Dec. 15, 2019, and its enduring, on-demand format allows participants to view the presentation at their convenience, from the comfort of their home or office, using a computer that has audio capabilities (working speakers or headphones) and an internet browser capable of playing an HTML5 video.
