{"id":2660,"date":"2010-10-04T06:37:00","date_gmt":"2010-10-04T01:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.policymed.com\/healthcare-leadership-council-national-dialogue-for-healthcare-innovation-2\/"},"modified":"2018-05-05T10:16:44","modified_gmt":"2018-05-05T05:16:44","slug":"healthcare-leadership-council-national-dialogue-for-healthcare-innovation-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.policymed.com\/2010\/10\/healthcare-leadership-council-national-dialogue-for-healthcare-innovation-2.html","title":{"rendered":"Healthcare Leadership Council: National Dialogue for Healthcare Innovation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; background: white; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial', 'sans-serif'; color: black; mso-ansi-language: EN;\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial', 'sans-serif'; color: black; mso-ansi-language: EN;\">Today, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hlc.org\/\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The Healthcare Leadership Council (HLC),<\/span><\/a> a coalition of chief executives representing all sectors of American healthcare, is hosting the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ndhisummit.org\/\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">National Dialogue for Healthcare Innovation<\/span><\/a> (NDHI), a forum in which leaders from private sector healthcare, government, academia and patient and consumer organizations will work together toward consensus on issues affecting healthcare innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; background: white; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; background: white; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial', 'sans-serif'; color: black; mso-ansi-language: EN;\">The coalition is co-chaired by David Barrett, MD, the CEO of the Lahey Clinic, and Bill Hawkins, the chairman and CEO of Medtronic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; background: white; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; background: white; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial', 'sans-serif'; color: black; mso-ansi-language: EN;\">The purpose of NDHI is to bring together a broad spectrum of leaders and organizations involved in healthcare delivery and policy for candid, transparent discussions of medical innovation in the United States, and the opportunities and challenges affecting its progress. HLC President Mary R. Grealy noted that the creation of this coalition is important because \u201cthroughout the health reform debate, the aspect of American healthcare often overlooked was innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; background: white; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; background: white; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial', 'sans-serif'; color: black; mso-ansi-language: EN;\">As a result, Grealy recognized the fact that “there has been an insufficient focus on how we can continue to develop and deliver new lifesaving medicines, technologies and healthcare practices to patients.\u201d Instead, there has been a focus on transparency and oversight, which has the effect of chilling research and scaring talented researchers and scientists from collaborating with industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; background: white; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; background: white; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial', 'sans-serif'; color: black; mso-ansi-language: EN;\">One of the goals of NDHI is to avoid the \u201cpolitical rancor that has too often been a part of health policy debates, and instead bring together leaders who have diverse points of view but the same goal: encouraging the innovations that help people live longer, healthier lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; background: white; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; background: white; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial', 'sans-serif'; color: black; mso-ansi-language: EN;\">To that effect, Grealy asserted that \u201cwhether the NDHI focuses on physician-industry collaboration or Medicare reimbursement policies or product liability laws, the goal of the coalition is to move away from gridlock and stalemate and move toward shared approaches to 21st century innovative healthcare.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; background: white; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; background: white; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial', 'sans-serif'; color: black; mso-ansi-language: EN;\">To accomplish this innovation, Barrett noted that \u201ccontinued medical innovation must play a critical role.\u201d The best way to bring about this progress according to Barrett is \u201cby achieving a sustainable, affordable, innovative future for American healthcare that involves all stakeholders \u2013 from patients to providers to manufacturers to policymakers \u2013 forging a path together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; background: white; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; background: white; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial', 'sans-serif'; color: black; mso-ansi-language: EN;\">Consequently, the NDHI will convene a Summit on Physician-Industry Collaboration on October 4, 2010, in Washington, DC, the first of a series of planned forums.
