Next week, the National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF) will be holding its Ninth Annual National Summit on Health Disparities.  The forum will be held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, in Washington, DC, on April 23 & 24th.  Practicing physicians can receive CME credit for attending various sessions.

The Summit brings together members of congress, federal employees, clinicians, and senior industry and advocacy group representatives to identify integrated solutions to health inequities.  Organized by the National Minority Quality Forum, in partnership with the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), the summit serves as a platform for distinguished panelists to present community-based, industry-sponsored, and national policy initiatives promoting wellness in minorities.  This year’s summit agenda will include clinical sessions on

  • diabetes-associated chronic kidney disease,
  • heart disease,
  • female health,
  • cancer, and
  • Infectious disease.

General assembly sessions will include the following topics:

  • minority enrollment in clinical trials;
  • healthcare reform and its impact on Medicare/Medicaid;
  • childhood obesity (national pilot program);
  • expanding access to healthcare through the pre-existing condition insurance plan (PCIP);
  • Medicare Shared Savings Program for accountable care organizations; and innovations in healthcare delivery.

NMQF was founded by Gary A. Puckrein, PhD, who serves as the current President and CEO, in 1998.  The organization was founded to address the critical need for strengthening national and local efforts to use evidence-based, data-driven initiatives to guide programs to eliminate the disproportionate burden of premature death and preventable illness for racial and ethnic minorities and other special populations.

The mission of the Forum is a research and educational organization dedicated to ensuring that high-risk racial and ethnic populations and communities receive optimal health care.  This nonprofit, nonpartisan organization integrates data and expertise in support of initiatives to eliminate health disparities.

The Forum aims to assist health-care providers, professionals, administrators, researchers, policy makers, and community and faith-based organizations in delivering appropriate health care to minority communities.  This assistance must be based on science, research, and analysis that lead to the effective organization and management of system resources to improve the quality and safety of health care for the entire U.S. population, including minorities.
