Online CME course designed to help cardiac care team members use lipid-lowering therapies to prevent recurrent events in ASCVD patients
Rockpointe, with joint provider the Potomac Center for Medical Education, has launched a new CME-certified, MOC-eligible webcourse to help health professionals prevent acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD).
ASCVD is a leading cause of death and mortality in the United States, and elevated serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is a widely recognized risk factor. Because most initial presentations of symptoms of heart disease are referred to interventional cardiology practitioners, these clinicians play a central role in managing patients with clinical ASCVD and in preventing recurrence of major adverse cardiac events. Since hypercholesterolemia is a major driver of ASCVD, lipid-lowering therapies (mainly in combination with statins) are the primary treatment approach to lower LDL-C and reduce cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk.
This CME activity, The Role of Interventional Cardiologists in Secondary Prevention of ACS: Redefining Clinical Practice, is intended to help cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, lipidologists, and other health care professionals who manage patients with ASCVD ensure that their patients receive optimal lipid-lowering therapy to reduce the risk of recurrent events. Modules within the activity will allow participants to explore current guideline recommendations and clinical trial results, review new and emerging treatment options, and discuss the benefits and limitations of those therapies.
At the conclusion of the activity, participants should be able to demonstrate the ability to:
- Identify residual CVD risk in high-risk patients and address additional CVD risk elements as appropriate.
- Differentiate the clinical properties of new and emerging pharmacologic approaches to reduce LDL-C and lower CVD risk.
- Analyze the potential strengths and weaknesses of new approaches to reduce CVD risk with new LDL-C-lowering agents in combination with statins.
The Potomac Center for Medical Education designates this activity for a maximum of 1.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Successful completion of the activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables participants to earn up to 1.25 Medical Knowledge MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn ABIM MOC credit equivalent to the amount of CME credit claimed for the activity.
This CME activity is available through Rockpointe’s online learning portal. Its enduring ondemand format allows participants to view the presentation at their own convenience, from the comfort of their home or office, using a computer that has audio capabilities (working speakers or headphones) and an internet browser capable of playing an HTML5 video.
Supported by an educational grant from Sanofi US and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, this activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Potomac Center for Medical Education and Rockpointe. The Potomac Center for Medical Education is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
Through effective continuing medical education, Rockpointe strives to improve and advance the quality of patient care. Its educational programs have been at the forefront of new issues in healthcare, including developments in specialties such as cardiology and lipidology, combatting the nation’s opioid crisis, and utilizing technical advances that improve care.
